I have bought a silage cutter and am wondering if anybody can tell me what number it is . It is a International . All I can find written on it is ENSILAGE CUTTER written on the elevator in the back . It pulls from the right side and has an elevator that goes off to the right side . There is no hitch on the back another wagon must be pulled along the right side . It is also a one row . Any information about this would be greatly appreciated . Am planning on restoring .

I just stumbled onto your post from 1999. I have been looking for some information on these choppers with elevators. Would really like to visit with you. Thanks.

I am looking at p. 157 of the '150 years of IH'. It sounds like you might have an IH Ronning field harvestor. There were 20 different models built over a 50 year period.

Sorry I don't have a scanner.

Farmall: Sounds like you have an IH-Ronning harvester from the late thirties. Most of the field harvesters of that period used elevators because tractors didn't have enough power to cut and blow so they used an elevator with some poor bozo in the wagon forking all this stuff out of the way. Up until then it was a corn binder for corn or mower and rake for hay. Haylage never really got going until the harvesters had good blowers and people learned how to make haylage. One fellow around here got out an old Massey Harris harvester, buckled it onto his 44 and conned me into getting on the wagon to do some corn. I lasted about three rounds and the tractor was way overheated by then. The thing drove like an anchor. Godd Luck with it and like any harvester be exceeding careful. Tom

An elevator? or a blower spout? I haven't seen a chopper with an elevator before!

I recently purchased property. On the property I found a Insilage Cutter with blower abandoned in the woods. The only identifying mark is Size N with a number 487 below. It is located on top of the cutter. I'm trying to look up mfg. and possible age.

CH Wendel's book, 150 Years of International Harvester, has a few pictures of the Ronning machines in the Forage Harvester section.
