Hi guys,

The combines just pulled into northwest Nebraska and I saw one field being cut this morning. Time is moving on and summer is pointing downhill from here.

Hope it is a good crop, but those heads look awfully small to me. Mostly straw seems like. We'll see.

Soon as the custom boys are gone, gonna be a foot race fer me to get everything done with the remaing time before she cools us off.

Glad I'm not farming irrigated; not enough stregth nor endurance in this old dog anymore. :>)

On the combine boys, when in the service in the '60's I was in Altus Okla. At night I would go to the grain elevator and run the power shovel unloading boxcar after boxcar of wheat. Phew what a workout. Only lasted for a month (as they when through) but what a job. But being a city boy, I enjoyed the connection with nature.

Allan, I wonder about the economics of having custom harvesting or having your own combine. I would guess that a lot of guys have the grain custom harvested and the try to bale the straw which is about half the value of the crop here.

There is a large county to the East of where I think you have the farm. Road map shows few roads and small population. Whats the story?
Poor land and low rainfall? Thats Cherry county,BTW.

KEH, I'm sure these guys have figured out the economics of the way they farm years ago. I'd find it difficult to 2nd guess them. I'm also sure many of them also own their own combines but for various reasons find it prudent to get their crop to storage quickly. I just hope it all works regardless. Good luck.....

BobMo, No second guessing, just idle curiosity. I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned speed in getting the crop to storage quickly. I remember a pile of wheat stored outside when I went through SD about 20 years ago. Guess you can get away with that in the dry country.
