Mornin' All,

The wheat is gone. The custom boys moved in with their big outfits. Two 9720 John Deeres I think?

Anyway, huge machines with accompying large semi trucks. Got into the field at around 5pm and by dark they were done.

Nice part is that they had some sweet straw choppers on those rascals. Had told the prior owners that the less straw, the better. Nothin' but 6" of stubble and a lot of dust out there now. :>)

Now, I'm gonna take my little 12 foot drill out there and really make the fur fly. :>)

Allan

On the matter of not baleing and removing the straw. Got to remind other area people that the matter of wind erosion comes up. Depending on your type of soil. A bad wind storm can cost everything. There is also the nitrogen value conpaired to comercial fertilizer cost. Just a dicision for the operator.

Yes Sir,

The ground is screamin' fer nitrogen, so the wheat gets followed by a liberal dose of alfafa.

Gonna try it this fall (in two weeks) without a nurse crop and see if I get lucky. I'm just gonna smack it with a disc and plant 'er.

Do you need to inoculate the seeds to form the little nitrogen nodule critters like other legumes?

Man alot of guys up here would pay good money for straw. They use it for fiber in their TMR mixers on the big parlors A freind in Tenn. got 2.50 a bale even before it was baled. Now in his area its at 3.50. Its a good 2.00 to 2.50 a bale here in Wis out of thrower balers. They only tip the scale at about 50 lbs each compared to the ground drop bales of 75.

Yes Sir,

I hear ya, but since the 2005 crop went to the prior owners and I'm in a footrace to get that alfalfa in, I just wanted it off there.

Next year, I'll be dealing with my crop and will of course bale every single strand of straw.

What are you going to plant in that straw now Allen? Yeah, we had one of those JD STS machines come in to cut wheat and they didn't even have a straw chopper on it but it was so hot and dry during harvest that there was really no straw left behind that machine to bale. It chopped it all up. Saw some other guys swathing behind some other brands of rotary machines too and it has been so dry now that they never got any straw baled up. We use to always bale up wheat or triticale straw behind our old 6600 and just took the spreader belt off and let it drop and it was ready to bale.

Hi Glen,

Yep, that's why I want a cylinder type combine. Gonna need a lot of straw fer the corrals.

Alfalfa behind the wheat. Also, rotating some tired old alfalfa 'into' wheat.

Sounds good with the alfalfa. I hope you get a good stand with it. Yeah, I understand you wanting a older cylinder combine too. We had to sell our old one during the drought not having anything to cut with it for 2 years. This was the first decent wheat crop in our area in 5 years. Now all the old machines you find around here outside are rusted out and good ones don't bring that much but still too much to justify having when you price those new parts. lol.

Allan,
What about sending that straw to New Mexico or Texas - Arizona. Some of the most beautiful house built down there are made of adobe... There's got to be a market for that in the SW...

If there's a market for straw in adobe here I've never seen it. lol. Most all those adobes in NM got metal roofs now hiding behind that upper wall. Saw one NM town with adobe building code tell a guy to cover his new shiny silver barn with adobe or tear it down. He tore it down and just left. We just use straw for stretching the cow feed or mix in grinder or for some bedding for calving season. Some of the dairies that moved in want it but don't want to pay enough for it to make much market for it. It's worth more here plowed in to keep ground blowing too. In big square bales straw stacked in walls makes a cheap feed bunker too.

Hey Glen,
It's been a long time since I was in your neck-o-the-woods, but I remember some beautiful homes out there made of adobe. what a shame - very nice looking architecture.
Guess times have change -

I'm sure there are still plenty built in the south part of TX but I'm up in the panhandle on the caprock next door to NM where there are lots of adobes yet. Everyone is building those darn huge yuppie houses with the tall peak roofs trying to outdo each other.
