box blade uses

I'd like to get a box blade to do landscaping and possibly grade my gravel driveway. Will it do the driveway effectively or should I be looking at a straight blade? What else do you use your box blade for? Does it need extra weight or down pressure?
Thanks

I guess I'm lucky enough to own both. If you can only have one, and you're going to grade the drive, I'd vote for the straight blade, but get one that angles AND tilts (mine also side shifts to either side, to get out beyond the tire). You might want to keep a good crown on the drive to shed water; an angling and/or tilting blade will do it easier than a box blade. My box blade is heavier than the straight blade, but not by much (both are heavy Woods brand blades).

I'm still learning the art of grading. Going slow and having a decently responding hydraulic system on the 3-pt. is critical to good grading.

I've used a LandPride 7' box blade to spread new road base on my driveway. I've also used it to loosen up some high spots on the driveway in an effort to make it more level where I park the camper. It's hard to achieve level when using a rear mounted blade. When the front wheels climb a high spot the blade will dig in more. When the front wheels dip the blade will rise. I found you need to keep a hand on the touch control to compensate for those variations. And repeated passes seems to even things out eventually.

I also use a straight blade for grading, but the box blade is useful for moving quantities of dirt or gravel from one spot to another.

I've also used my pto 3 point hay rake and box blade to clean out dead grass out of my lawn. I use the hay rake as a power rake, then use the box blade (with rippers removed) to gather the "windrows" into big piles. From there I had to stuff the dead grass into trash bags by hand.

My box blade is heavy enough by itself. I have not had to add any weight.
