I need group support here as the worst has finally came to pass, just as I suspected it would one day.

Wife bought her saddle horses with HER money that I had secretly earmarked for another old tractor. :>(

The shame of it all. I'll never be able to show my face in public again! (Come to think of it, showing my face in public is a bad idea anyway).

Groan! Woe is me,

Allan

Allen, Allen, Asert yourself for chriminy"s sake....Oh wait...what am I saying...I am married to a horse woman myself. I think I posted this back when your wife was talking Hanoverians. Here are my views on horses compared to tractors in general. My wife has 4 (yes, I said my wife....no we involved there). I don"t dislike the horses and more or less enjoy making hay, etc for their consumption, but from a practical standpoint..... ....well you will get my drift...
When a horse misbehaves, you could be in real trouble, when the tractor misbehaves, you can always turn it off.

When you can"t afford to feed your tractor, no problem...with horses however.....

Tractor exhaust generally floats away on the breeze, horse exhaust however requires the use of a shovel....(although it does make for good tomatoes)

When you put the tractor away for the day, you don"t need to brush it down and pat it and tell it that it was a "good tractor" (although maybe some of us do)

When the tractor dies, it at least has scrap value and doesn"t require the digging of a large hole....if it dies in the winter, it doesn"t matter that there is frost in the ground....(and don"t even bring up the rendering facility....my wife might be reading this....)

I could go on for a while longer, but I will probably get enough guff from the horse lovers out there..... .remember, I said I don"t particularily mind the horses (like I said, my wife might be reading this..... )

Since you are already in deep s**t (or soon will be), look at it as an opportunity, as I do, to justify more old iron..... (and no....I am not talking horse shoes.)

Hi Rau,

Fer some reason, I have no urge at all to take a picute of a horse. Seems like a waste of shutter speed 'er something. :>(

She bought a 6-year-old AQHA cutting horse and a little pony for the grandkids. Gotta admit, that ol' boy knows his stuff; I think he'd deal cards if you asked it of him. :>)

I know what ya mean about the cost of this stuff. The insurance cost about what I thought the nag was worth, but hey, whadda I know? :>(

Allen,
Your wife will need another horse to keep the new one company. After all horses are herd animals. Heck, buy a mare if she already has a gelding then you can breed her and raise more horses and make more money and breed more horses and make more money and breed more..... .. Well you get the idea. Then with all that money, you can expand the farming operation, then buy a bigger tractor and get newer equipment, then..... well you get the idea! LOL

Farmer Matt and Keith, I guess I need to clarify or go more into detail. I wasn't thinking about Allens' wife breeding her mare with anything on the farm. I was thinking most likely she bought a gelding to ride, being as geldings are easier to deal with (I know I'll catch he!! from someone that has a nice riding mare), but as I am in the business and to do it right you need to send the mare to a breeding farm or better yet ship semen in, spend mega dollars to go to a big name stallion, so you can get that top notch offspring so you can sell it to make more money, buy more horses, bigger farm, more equipment..... ... I was trying to be sarcastic and funny. Guess I flunked. Sorry I didn't go more into detail. Allen, I do enjoy your stories and pictures. If your wife or you needs any advice in the horse business, I am here to lend an ear or shoulder to cry on.
Take care and keep up with the stories and picts.
Clint

Allen,

The cheapest part of owning a horse is the purchase price. I have 3 "Yard Ornaments" of my own and they cost me a small fortune to keep. having to buy small square balers to support them, trailers to haul the hay on, Tractors to manage the hay production, and spraying equipment. I have trouble each spring expending the effort to attend the Farm Shows and local auctions to add to the equipment required to make top quality hay....

What kind of horse did she buy?

Also, you should understand, that the horse has to eat, and what it eats is hay and pasture!

Now, you need some hay equipment to bale the small square bales that the horse will require!

With me so far?

That 1066 or 1086 or whatever it is you have is going to be TOO BIG for your smaller hay equipment. Yes, it probably bales big bales wonderfully, but the horse will do much better on small squares!

You are going to NEED another tractor! Unless you already HAVE something like a 656, you're going to need one, and if you do, you will need another tractor to pull the haywagons in with!

Obviously, you can't expect the wife to drive the antiques, so, you are going to HAVE to have a semi-modern tractor for that purpose!

You won't want to use the bigger diesels either, due to their high fuel consumption of that $2.519/gallon diesel (less taxes)!

This is a PERFECT opportunity and excuses to get another tractor! She can't even argue against it, since you will be "doing it for her"!

If it is a "fancy" horse, one which see'l be wanting to "SHOW", you will need a horse trailer, and likely a pickup truck to pull it also, since you'll probably be needing to use YOURS for something else at the same time she wants to haul her horse!

See? All kinds of excuses to buy stuff YOU wanted anyway!

What you need to do is buy a team of horses and some McCormick-Deering horse-drawn implements to add to your farming operation. Horses were the first tractors, afterall.

Just think Allen, if you end up with a barn and round pen you will need a bobcat to keep things clean and a small tractor with a loader to get in there also. You will also need a manure spreader to put it on the feilds. So this maybe a blessing in the long run. LOL

Well, don't go that far just yet.... It may not be the answer. My "Little woman" has been making comments about her horse she had before we got married, and watching all the horse shows on RFD-TV.... And being the wise old man that I am, I know that i can't change ANYTHING if she decids to take the plunge. So... I'll just be very quiet about the glue pot hay burners until she mentions them. At least I'll have some peace and quiet until the tragic day....

Oh pshaw. The shame of it all. And here I thought you were the king of your castle. I know I am. The little missus said I could be. The only thing is, she has the key. But back to the subject, When I first met the wife, she thought we should have horseys,(we can say that now old buddy, cause you got some)so we got two arabians and after about a month, she fell off hers and will be paying for that one for the rest of her life. Broken tailbone in two places. The moral is at our age, we don"t need to be playing Roy Rogers. We don"t heal near as fast as we used to. Tell her to be very careful. I"m not saying she can"t ride, but a horsey is still an animal, and has a mind of it"s own sometimes. Not like a tractor that goes where YOU want it to. Later, and we"re here for ya, Harley
