Can someone tell me the differance between a one way disck and a disc plow? I have a Grand Detour and some people call it a disc plow and others call it a one way.

This is what we call a oneway in the plains areas.

Glen, How deep would that cut and how much HP did you need? Your picture looks more like what we in North Dakota called a surflex tiller (to borrow JD's term) and 20 feet was the max size available. A true one-way that we ND folks used was usually about 8 to 10 feet maximum and would be a much heavier pulling unit than the "surflex" type. Interesting how implements and the terms we use to describe them change from region to region.

Usually 3-5" deep. About 70-130 HP depending on how deep and conditions or how many were pulled in tandem. Here we always just called these oneways, Krause, JD, Schafer and others. No one uses them much here anymore but they do work good for one pass to cut out big weeds or volunteer. They go for scrap metal price or less at auctions now but are handy when you need them. Here in clay loam soil they aren't good to use when it's too wet because they pack the ground bad. Many blame the oneways for the dust bowl days but when I see sand hills in grass west of here that were once plowed out I know that land should have never all been plowed out back then. The JD literature I have calls them disk tillers. Krause literature calls them a oneway plow though. I've never heard the term surflex tiller until reading here. Yep, different terms by regions.

Just another pic of Krause oneway disc tiller used in plains areas. This is one of 2 pulled in tandem.

One way plows all disc are on a common axle with or without scrapers. Disc plows all disc are on an indivual mounting bracket and must have a scraper to work properly. Disc plows were used in rocky areas they will stir the dirt in the heavyest of flint rocks and also will roll over solid limestone. I have had an HM 150 which was a simi mount turn an H side ways in the furrow. A disc plow pass will look much like a bottom plow furrow, and will go just as deep in good dirt. The disc set more square with the furrow, than a one way would. 4 disc are the largest I have seen except for one a friend of mine and his brother put a 3 and a 2 togather and made a 5. IH had simi mounts and trailers. The only John Deere's I have seen were trailers there were some 3 point Ford, Massey etc. Taylerway made 2 point and 3 point simi mounts. IH made several 2 point. I still have a 2 point 3 disc. Most of the taylerway's I have seen were 4 disc, I never used one but have been told a taylerway would plow concret. We used an HM 150 and a A151 the most we had a 2 disc for a 230 also and used it a lot.

Oneway disc or disc tiller would have discs on a axle with spool spacers. Seen them 3 point 3ft. up to 20 ft. drag type with multiple axles. A disc plow is where larger discs are mounted on separate brackets. I think MM made some with 7 or 8 discs. Most were less and larger discs to go deeper.

One way: all disks on one axle
Disk Plow: each disk on its own hanger/bearing.
That's the SW Texas definitions.

To me, it is the size. One look at it and I would decide. Disk plow: A couple to maybe 4 or 5 LARGE disks. Made to go deep. Oneway: 8 to 15 foot cut. I have never seen a disk plow that did not have each disk mounted on its own individual bearing support. All oneways I have seen have disks on a common shaft.

Kenny,I have a JD # 120 5 disk tiller that will take several rounds to cut 8 feet but it is just right for my JD BO. JD disk tillers emerged into surflex tiller"s which if set correctly did a nice job of plowing. The largest surflex I remember here in N. Tx was a 28 disk. One has to look hard for a farmer plowing with a disk tiller today here. Tx Jim
