Mornin" Fellas,

Local dealer had an old Gleaner F come in on trade Friday. Loaded, 6 cylinder Allis diesel, hydro, A/C, almost new cylinder bars, the large-bin package and comes with two grain tables; one equipped with a pickup.

Pillow blocks on the straw walkers are loose and I spotted a wear hole in the side of the clean grain elevator, so I know it has lots of hours on it.

Nice part is that it has lived in a shed, looks to be very clean and hasn"t had anything other than wheat and alfalfa run thru it.

Gotta go look at this devil, "cause today is Sunday and I can really pick "er apart without the salesman"s "pressure". :>)

By the pictures she does not look bad. The big deciding factor is how much $$

Vern, Vern,

This is from a dealer. Of course it is going to be too much money. :>)

I've been in there 3 times looking at this old rascal and I'm thinking I can salvage it without too much agony. Cylinder bars, concaves and raddle chain appear to have been just replaced in the not too distant past. The pickup on the little 13 footer looks very good.

Now the bad part: He wants $3800 for the machine and both tables delivered 'bout one million miles out in the country to my place.

I really don't think it has ever seen an ear of corn or a bean pod. Total grainer.

It's been years since I saw an F go for more than a grand around here on any farm sale, and heads are dirt cheap. If it's a small grain machine- then it does not have corn-soy special options. For $3800, better be some warranty on it. Pic looks fine, but internals are what get the job done.

Hi Paul,

It's a straight F and I guess that is about the only thing I really don't like about it; Well, other than the fact that the darned straw chopper is missin'. And, the fact that after ya been in a F2 or F3, the F seems pretty basic. :>(

But otherwise, it is exactly like my old F2 was down to the fat tires. She's been around the world, tho; just don't know if it is worth what he is askin' fer it.

Really dunno 'bout this one,

Allan

Allan, is that your new truck in the background of the first picture? I called about a F couple weeks back, decided against it as it was a gas, and i only have 5 acres I was going to put into beans, decided against that too. You do have some kinda luck. Rich

Hmmmm, Yeah.

That truck is kind of a sore spot 'round here. I never, ever wanted it, but things and circumstances dictated otherwise and I was outvoted. :>(

I just dunno 'bout the old F. They are so darned simle to work on and this one is set up just the way I want it with the 6 cylinder diesel and all. But, here I go, fightin' with myself again. :>)

"dropped out of the sky!". You have the luck of the Irish. Mind you, it doesn't hurt to wait and not buy the first thing that comes along. Something I need to remember ocasionally.

How have things been going? I've been busy making hay and hauling hay and doing family things so I haven't been keeping up.

John

"lived in a shed" that realy helps. Here when we say "beans", we mean pinto beans which means dirt and rocks and lots of wear. What did he use the pickup for? Good luck..Kennyp

Hi Buddy!

Yep, I hear ya. The pickup was used on swathed oats, I would guess, 'cause the thing is only something like 8' wide mounted on a 13' table. Can't imagine running beans with that little guy as you could only stuff 6 rows thru 'er. The wheat table is an 18', which was the standard header on the F.

Also, I just don't think it has been in the beans because all the fliteing is in very good shape, there is no wear at any of the traps and no sign of a dirt package. It must be a late model F, because it has the speed sensors; don't think the early ones had that feature, did they?

But, who knows? I'll just have to go and check it out, I guess.

The only thing that really worries me is that engine and the hydro (pulled on and off of the transport okay tho). I can fix anything else on those old klunkers in my sleep. :>)

Well Allen, straw choppers for Fs are readily available at a multitude of salvage yards. I can tell by the decal style this is a 1974-76 machine. There were hydro Fs in these years, some people think only the F2 and up came that way. Sensors are the precursor to Tattletail systems on x2 machines. 18 foot head, maybe for your dryland grain is fine, but here, 13 feet is all an F would want in wheat.

Thanks Tim,

I thought the stickers looked "late style" too.

I don't remember the old F's having the tinted glass and the thick interior sound-deadening insulation either. Although, that exhaust pipe is still sticking out the left side like the old ones did instead of being vertical on the right side, as the F2s had.

Dunno, I always ran 18 and 20' tables on 'em, 4 rows of corn and 12 rows of beans. That 6 cylinder diesel would beller the black smoke, but keepin' 'em full made fer less cracking, I thought.
