Dearborn plow shear broken, and rust ...

Just bought a new, old rusty Dearborn plow. And have discovered that one of the two shears is broken and bent out a little at about the 2/3s-back point. Looks like it has just happened. Maybe I dropped it too hard, because I didn't see it before I bought the plow. But now would think that it must be welded or replaced. The whole plow is a beautiful shade of rust! Gonna be fun getting that shear off. But guess it can be done. Main question here is: should I attempt to weld it or replace it? Does not seem to be very worn. Only the rust. And while I'm asking, is there any other advice about restoring an old, well-rusted plow? Other than the rust it looks to be in good shape, and not very worn. Thanks, Gale

Oh, when you're done with the plow, be sure to protect the now clean and shiny surface with something. I use old motor oil - just paint it on with a paint brush and store the plow somewhere inside.

And the best way to clean off that rust is to use the plow. Yes, it won't work very well, until it's cleaned off... Try to plow in some sand or gravel - clay won't clean the rust off very well.

As for the plow points, you should be able to pick up a pair (it is a two bottom plow???) at your local farm and ranch store. Just take along the old one to match it up. Also, be sure to get new bolts. The old one's will be worn down and will cause the dirt to catch.

Tim (Who's headed into Cal Ranch this morning to do the same).

You're gonna need to clean that rust off of the moldboard or slats, whichever this plow has, before you use it. Otherwise, it will do a poor job of plowing, as the dirt will try to stick to it. The business part of a plow needs to be shiny and slick, so the dirt will just slide off.
