how many shanks can I pull in clay loam with a CaseIH 685 (62 horsepower)?
what's good? what's bad? parts availability?

I have a Oliver 1855 diesel and I pull a 10 shank chisel plow, at about 4 mph give or take. The soil is clay loam that is along the blue ridge mountains in Md.

Yea - going to leave most of my bean stubble this year, see how that works..... Save the fuel & wear. Still plowing the corn stubble down, our cold, wet, and heavy clay soils don't dry or warm if the sun doesn't hit it in spring.

Many of the fellows seem to be telling you the hp for a field cultivator, not a real honest chisel plow. Hope everyone is on the same page here with implements? Chisel plows are meant to go deep, rip up compaction, shatter the ground. Need to travel fairly fast for the spring action to get going properly. That all takes hp & traction.

I pulled a 10 point chisel with an 86hp tractor, but it didn't work well. Use a 140 hp tractor with it now, much better, goes deep enough & fast enough to actually do it's job. This is a simple 2 inch shank, don't even think of the 4 inch twists.....

We pulled 7 shanks with our 1855, was always told 15 HP per shank.

I don't think you could find one small enough for that small of a tractor, smallest I've ever seen is a 5-shank.

If you want it to do the job as intended, figure no less than 10hp. per foot.

I pulled 12' with an 62 hp 830 Case. An IH #55 has tough shanks but the four angle iron draw pole is not great. Parts can likely be found at an ag wrecker - they built lots of these. M2CW.

If you're going to chiesel plow you need to go around 12 inches deep at least, your tractor wouldn't pull a big enough one to cover the wheel tracks if you pulled it that deep. You need more HP.

You're rite about the hp. I use mine as a deep tillage, not as a chisel plow, even though that's what IH called it. My land is sandy loam and no hard pan to worry about. IMHO, the #55 IH has too lite a draw pole to be a true chisel plow.

So, this means a 64 horse 4 wd (JD 5320) ain't got enough moxie to pull a 5 shank chisel plow? I've been looking at one myself. If my toy can't handle it, best to save my money.
