Do I really need the newer 600 series for small farm hay crop? What are the advantages of the newer tractor?

I have worked JD "70"'s, and I can tell you they can be gas hogs...maybe 7 gallons an hour..!! Never carried so much gas to a tractor.!! The AC WD-45 handled 1 more plow bottom, and used about 1/2 the gas... Nothing wrong with using a Late "B", or "A" to bale with..the "B"'s are VERY frugal on gas, and will handle most small square balers... Not having "live PTO" should not scare anyone away from these tractors..we have used them for almost an entire lifetime..you just get a little more understanding about "slipping" gears, and listening to your equipment..!! Sometimes, you would think our "B"'s had automatics..!!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. Growing up we baled several thousand small squares every summer. We used both a 3020 and a 630 on a JD 24T baler. I love those old 2 bangers but we used to run through at least 1 set of PTO knuckles every year when we used the 630 on the baler. When we switched to the 3020 our PTO problems were solved. You could not tell any difference on the PTO and drive components by watching the machine work. Both tractors seemed smooth when working but you could sometimes hear the difference if you listened close. If you are not going to bale that much hay the 2-cylinder will probably work just fine.

Being built like a tank and running at a slow RPM isn't a prime consideration for harvesting a small hay crop. If you are going to use a mower and square baler, any of Deeres from the 50 series up will do just fine, as long as they have "live power". Haybines and rollers are a whole different story. Everybody has his favorite tractor. I would suggest you go for the 20 or 30 series because of the modern hydraulics. They also have a modern 3 point hitch with draft control, just in case you need them sometime.

Jimbob, I have read on here the 600 series has updated hydraulics, clutch, and power steering over the 60. Would think this would apply to 70 also. If I had a 70 already I would not trade for a 620, 630. If I knew of a 620,630 that was priced the same as a 70 it would be a hard choice. 70 would be a little harder on fuel. I don't think one is going to do anything the other won't. I have a 630 and would love to have a 70. In answer to your question, no.

I noticed JD 70 are less expensive than a 620 or 630 by a good amount in the same condition. I also think the JD 70 is built like a military tank- 925 RPM rated industrial engine, large straight cut gears, etc.
