Looking to buy another tractor, budget only allows for one more at this time. Found a M and a 40U both in similar condition and the price difference is not an issue. I don't really have a need for the 3pt on the 40U and would only be using either tractor for fun around the yard. Seems that the tractors are similar for my use. My question, If I were to restore the tractor in the future and costs were similiar which tractor model is the most desireable and valuable among collectors. I realize everybody has a favorite but is there a big difference between these two?
Thanks for any of your ideas.

THe 40U is much less likely to turn over to the side. The 40U will pull more than the M. But the 40U does not have a PTO as standard equipment and the owners manual says that the PTO shaft must be removed in order to use the 3 point system. I sold my 40U about 24 years ago for that reason. Was never able to find a PTO shaft for it, so did not personally verify the information in the manual.

I wonder what a JD M is worth. A friend told me today that his father in law wants to sell his M. It has a brush hog, plows an other equipment. I'm going to look at it as a favor tomorrow. I don't plan to buy it, but, at least I can tell others what it looks like. This is at Columbus, Mississippi

I agree with Wayne about the 'value' thing.

I'd pick the 40U. One reason is it's much easier to get on and off the seat than the M.

Jeff, if you are just talking "value or desireable" I would say the 40U Sometimes "value" depends on what a certian collector was raised up on - or needs for his collection.
