I just got done with a 1936 JD B and the governor surges.Everything is new in the governor. I have tried a different mag that runs fine on a 1937 B . The carb is in excellent shape. Is there a rule of thumb to adjust the rod from the throttle to the governor and the rod from the governor to the carb. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks

Good morning there Jerry, Just to satisfy a few thigns before moviong on to adjustments:

1. If you remove the throttle linkage at the carb to where you are controlling the carbs idle speed manually, is it possible to hold it at idle and make her idle smooth and steady at a reasonably slow RPM????? ????? (thus eliminating any true governor only problems)

2. If not, have you tweaked the carbs top idle needle in or out to see if she will them manually idle slow n steady??? About 2 out is a good startign adjustment point.

3. If not, do you suspect any vacuum leaks in or near the carb like its throttle shaft bushings or the carb to manifold gasket or the manifold??? A spray of WD 40 or Carb Cleaner or a propane torch would make a vacuum leak caused idle problem to smooth out and speed up momentarily.

4. Have you tried to adjust the slow idle throttle stop screw against the spring to speed her idle up a bit??? If its set to slow, the tractor may be startign to die in which case a "properly operatign" governor would naturally kick her up a bit, then she slows down again, over n over and "hunts" as you mentioned.

5. Finally, if she will idle manually okay after trying to set the idle stop screw and tweaking the idle needle and confirming no vacuum leaks, try it again with the governor attached to the carbs throttle and see if those adjustments helped the "hunting"

ADJUSTING: Remove the linkage from the governor to the carb and open the hand throttle to wide open position and with it open and the carbs throttle also held wide open, the rod to the carburetor should lack about the width of 1/2 the hole from reaching the governor linkage.

Try the carbs needle and idle adjustments above and see if she will ever manually idle slow n smooth, and then the linkage adjustment and insure there are no vacuum leaks and then post back what happened. Hopefully, myself or sonme of the other fine ol boys on here can help you out. If its not a governor problem (which these tests will help show) we will guide you through more carb troubleshooting procedures. If it is the governor, we will take a look at it then.

Good Luck n God Bless

Thanks John , I printed the page that you sent and took it to the shop with me and went step by step ,and found that the length of the governor to carb rod was to short. What a difference a little adjustment will make. When warms up I have a bunch of other tractors I need to check this on, they run ok but I think this will help. THANKS JOHN !!!!
