When I got this H it had an alternator rigged to be run with a belt from the big pulley on the right side of the tractor. I promptly cut all this loose and now I find NO generator or even a pulley on the fan drive to power one. Did it ever have a generator? It does have a starter to turn the fly wheel and this appears to be original equip. Sure would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks and God bless. JoeM

Good evening Joe, I have a 1941 H and it has a generator. It is driven from a pulley on the fan shaft. The light switch can be pulled part way on and the generator will charge at a higher rate. Have a nice evening. Jerry

Hey Joe, (Isn't that an old song title??) Im not much of an H man, but if it has an original starter, it would have had a generator driven off a fan shaft pulley to charge the battery. On a lot of tractors, if they didnt need a generator (hand starts) the fan shaft was lacking a pulley, but had them for running the generators on electric start models. Do you have any idea if your fan shaft has ever been replaced or something????? ? Are there any left over thigns that look like were generator mounts at one time??? Good Luck n God Bless you also and our service men n women. Ol John T Nordhoff

Joe, what year H are you working with? If it is a later H with factory electric start it had a generator from the factory [it would have had a pulley on the fan shaft also]. If it's an early H that came as a hand start it has probably had the starter & flywheel added, then the alternator added to the pulley side. ~If you have the early rubber hub fan it never had a generator on it [at least with that fan on it].
~Electric starting wasn't available on the H until S/N 27000 [early 1941]..

The serial # is 48132, so it very probably did have a generator originally. I have the steering shaft out right now so will have a fine chance to check whether or not there ever was a pulley. Feel like there just had to be one. Can I not just buy a pulley and slide it on from the steering wheel end? As for the generator --will I have much trouble finding one which I can use? I feel real fortunate because the generator and the shroud around the flywheel are the only two parts that I have found missing so far. It is a cold night in Texas so all repairs will be put on hold. Thanks to both of you for your advice and Mr. Nordoff you have my prayers for your son. God bless

One more question- Do I have to take the fan shaft out or can I just remove the fan and install a pulley. Really do not think I have enough space between the fan and the radiator to work--- so any suggestions will be appreciated.

Kenneth at Classic Generator in Midlothian TX will have your generator or can locate one for you. He rebuilt the generator on my JD A.

Hi again Joe, It shouldnt be too hard to find a generator if you have access to any JD wrecking yards or check Green Magazine or Two Cyliner Magazines web sites for the parts vendor links or johnnypopper.com and this web site etc. Since youre basically starting from scratch, you could go with a full fledged Voltage Regulator, or a cut out relay and light switch controlled field regulation and whichever, myslef or clooney and others would be glad to assisit you in figuring out the wiring. I see no reason why you cant find a fan shaft with a pulley, but you have to worry about matching gears also. Sorry, Im not familiar with the fan shaft you have and whether it could just have a pulley added. If youre not concerned with originality or Correct Police, and have a good shop and can achieve proper mountign and concentricity, you couuld just add a pulley. Bottom line, if you get a pulley and generator mounted up, we can guide you in its wiring.

Thanks for the prayer support, I guess were gonna have almost 200,000 brave men and women over there in harms way soon, and thats sons and daughters and wives n husbands and like Mr Jennings over on the johnnypopper site was saying, its more painful to send his son off to war then when he went his self. Take Care Ol John T

Joe, by late 41 your tractor could easily have come as an electric start. You can buy a pulley but it doesn't go on from the steering wheel end. The fan must come off the fan shaft , then the pulley is installed, then the fan parts go back on.
~I sent you a picture showing the fan pulley & fan installation parts.
