I have a 1946 JD A and the previous owner put a coil and condensor on it and set it up so it uses the breaker points in the orginal magneto. I am one that has some tendenacies to like antiques set up the way they were manufactured or at least so they look like they did when manufactured. I do not know if the magneto functions (other than the points ofcourse). I have had some people tell me that magneto systems start much harder.

Given the above I have several questions:

1. Are there any pitfalls I should consider in switching back to a magneto system?

2. If I decide to go back to a magneto system should I have the orginal magneto rebuit or should I purchase a new magneto?

3.If I purchase a new magneto what is the best kind to buy? I see some advertised that claim to be hotter than others.

4. If I decide not to switch back to a magneto system, are there distributors with electronic componets that I should consider? If so what brands and where do I get them?

Jess, lets take your questions one at a time..... ..... ....

1. Are there any pitfalls I should consider in switching back to a magneto system? -----Shouldn't be any problems switching back to a magneto system your tractor, it probably originally came with a mag. If you still have the original 6 volt system you might even have better starting as the 6 volt systems pulls the coil voltage quite low under hard cold cranking or with a slightly low battery. Usually with a mag if the battery can get it to turn over at all it will start... [you can't say that about a distributor system].

2. If I decide to go back to a magneto system should I have the original magneto rebuilt or should I purchase a new magneto? -----That is something you will have to decide by how much is missing on your mag & what it will take to make it function correctly again. Good hot Wico mags are not cheap & if all you need is a coil, possibly a coil core & some other minor work it will probably be cheaper to repair yours. [assuming a Wico C or X mag now].

3.If I purchase a new magneto what is the best kind to buy? I see some advertised that claim to be hotter than others.-----If you have a production tractor without real high compression or other add ons that would require a hotter spark you won't gain anything from spending extra for a HOT mag. Probably the best bang for the buck & one that would be a correct replacement for your vintage of "A" tractor would be the Wico XH 1042 [commonly known as the Wico X]. A Wico C was probably on it when it was sold. The Wico C would also be a good choice & would fit & work correctly on your "A". The Wico XH comes with the later better magnetic rotor so output shouldn't be a problem with the X.

4. If I decide not to switch back to a magneto system, are there distributors with electronic components that I should consider? If so what brands and where do I get them-----If you don't switch back to a magneto it probably doesn't make much difference what you use as it won't be correct anyhow. The Wico XH distributor would look more at home & not so out of place on your "A", but that isn't a very good distributor & you would be much better off with a mag. About the only other choice is the Delco [round housing] distributor from a later 12 volt "A" & that would be the best distributor as far as durability & adaptability goes. You can even get electronic ignition parts for the Delco distributor.

~ MORE....Are you sure you have a converted mag on it now? There were a lot of converted XH distributors on those ''A's" [looks almost exactly like a Wico X magneto],,Is there a rectangular cover held on with 2 screws on the front of your mag/distributor with a post sticking out of it? [if so it's a Wico XH distributor, not a mag],,, Can you hear the impulse coupling snap as you turn the engine over real slow? [if so it was a mag at one time]. There isn't anything wrong with a Wico XH distributor converted to an external coil system & they actually work pretty good. The external coil Wico mag/distributor conversion just doesn't look production, but again neither does the round external coil Delco distributor.....
