Help!! I used my friend's 2020 deisel to mow with. When I put it up it was running fine. I went back a week later and it was slow to start but was smoking excessively. I checked the crank case and it was very overfilled. I checked the hydraulic fluid and it was under filled. What is going on. How can crank case increase unless from another source like hydraulic unless someone added oil. (very unlikely) Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I will probably be on the hook for repairs. Thanks

SuperHank,

G-MAN probably has the right answer. The earlier model 1020's and 2020's ('65, '66, '67 and maybe '68) had the power steering pump mounted on the timing cover. There's a seal around the timing gear driven pump drive shaft. That thing can just pop out so hydraulic fluid gets pumped into the crankcase like there's no tomorrow. You should see it bubbling out the breather on the valve cover, and the dipstick is wet all the way to the top if that's happening.

It happened to my 1020 once. The seal part was 3 or 4 dollars. The fun part was pulling off all the stuff in the way to get that pump out to replace the seal.

First thing to check is if you have a timing gear cover mounted steering pump. If so -- dollars to donuts -- that's what happened.

Does that tractor have an engine-mounted hydraulic pump or power-steering pump of some sort? The reason I ask is that I remember Richard Hain of Green Magazine writing about a similar problem with what I believe was a 2020 or similar tractor. It turned out that the pump seal was leaking and transferring hydraulic oil into the crankcase. If that's the problem, it shouldn't be terribly difficult or expensive to fix. I've never had the pleasure of working on one of those models, so that's just my two cents.
