I recently purchased a 420 utility serial # 420U 89033.I don't know much about Dubuque built tractors but this tractor seems kind of odd.It has an adjustable square front end and adjustable rear axles on it like a 420W, but it also has utility fenders. Is it possible that the very first 420W's were called a Two Row Utility? I received some literature with the tractor and it refers to it as a Two Row Utility. I would appreciate any information on this tractor. Thanks, Jim

My 1958 book that introduced the slant sheering wheel on the 420 lists the Utility on the same page with the 320 and says excellent for grove vineyard and orchard.
It then lists on the next page the Row-crop utility that can have the front wheels spaced up to 80" (88" optional) and the rear wheels spaced up to 98". 21" crop claerance. This husky tractor plants and culivates 2 or 4 rows with extra stability you want for working on sloping fields.
The parts book shoW a tube front axel for the utility (U serial number) and a square axel for the row crop utility (W serial number) and then it showes a square axel for the special utility (V serial number). The tect manual lists the special between the utility and the row crop utility and is really an "inbetween" between the row crop and the hi-crop. I can not find anything that lists or shows a tractor with a U serial serail number with a square front axel.

After thought. What are the dementions of your tractor? Could it be that at some point in time someone changed out the casting with the serial number from a W to U and left on the U serial #. Might be worth it to send the serial # to 2 cylinder and see what they say. Maybe you dom have something special.
