I'm still fighting the injector pump timing on a 2010 backhoe we put rings & rod bearing in. Can anyone tell me which mark on the flywheel to line up with the pump lineup marks? I have 1 mark 180, 1 mark 23, and 1 mark with a D on 1 side and a C on the other that you can see thru the sight hole in the bell housing.I know the pump times on no. 1 cylinder compression stroke but which mark? Any help is appreciated. Signed a dumb ol gas mechanic!

Hey HTR, I went back this morning and dug around a bit and found that stud DID have an allen socket in it. Backed it out a few rounds and the old gal smoothed out and ran like new money! Thanks for all the help. We've been fooling around with this thing for 2yrs. off & on. Never would have figured it out without Ya'll! Rick.

USE THE D/C MARK , ALSO THIS PUMP HAS LOAD ADVANCE AND NOT SPEED ADVANCE SO IF IT WASN'T SET ON TEST STAND YOU WILL HAVE TO ADJUST IT BY EAR.IF IT ISNT SET RIGHT THE ENGINE WILL SMOKE ABT 4 TIMES AS MUCH AS IT NORMALY DOES DURING WARM UP AND WILL HAVE NO POWER.HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE TO YOU. DON

Thanks for the help! The "professional" mechanic that tried to help with this thing had it set on the 26 mark and it would barely run, bellowing black smoke, no power, running hot, etc. Can you tell me how to set the load advance? I really appreciate the help! Rick

I would doubt that you still have a load advance pump on the tractor. The first 2010s did have a load advance pump, but some time in the mid 60s JD had a program, to pay part of the cost, to update, to a speed advance pump. Even if the owner didn't take advantage of the program, not many of them have survived 43 years. If you have a trimmer screw, (a small allen head screw with a jam nut that takes a 7/16 wrench) it is a speed advance pump. To check the advance, there is a plastic window, with degree marks, that is installed on the timming window, and you can watch the timming mark, on the cam ring, move as the engine is speeded up and slowed down. I don't remember for sure, but I think the advance is 6 degrees, from slow idle to rated speed. The amount of advance is adjusted with the allen head trimmer screw.

By the way somebody did post a picture of a 3010 that still had a load advance pump on it. This was a few months ago.

You didn't tell us you were trying to time on 26 degrees on your other post.

The 2010 load advance was adjusted the same way as speed advance except it had to be under full load. I never converted any 2010 pumps but i did a jillian 3010 and 4010's.

Tell me more about this. Lets talk 4010s if that is what you are familiar with. As you recall, I'm sure. The first 4010 load advance pumps, with the flat back housing, timed at 10 degrees before top dead center. When you installed the kit, that JD called a power piston kit, it included a new pump housing with the casting on the back for the servo piston and the trimmer screw, and was retimed to 5 degrees before top dead center. This is static timing, and you had to make your own 5 degree mark on the flywheel. The ones that I did you then adjusted the trimmer screw to get 6 degrees advance as the engine comes to rated speed. Most of the young mechanics try to time them on TDC like the 4020, and the engine flutters at top end. Tell me more about how you do it.

I DID THEM THE SAME WAY BUT THE 2010 WAS TRIMMED UNDER FULL LOAD AS THAT PUMP WAS LOAD ADVANCE NOT SPEED ADVANCE.

I didn't know it either! When we pulled the oil pump to replace rod bearings and screwed up the pump timing orginally we timed it back on the dc mark, but with the gear 180 out, just like some wise man on this board told us. We had a diesel "expert" come out and re-time it. He worked 4 hours and left it running worse than we had it. I just timed it like Ya'll said and it cranks and revs up a LOT better, but boils white smoke and still runs rough. I just went back and checked, there is a threaded shaft with a jam nut on the bottom front or right side of pump but no plastic window or degree marks, only a small metal plate with 2 screws to cover line up marks. I don't know what yr. this thing is. It looks like it could have been used launching Noah's Ark! Thanks for the help. Rick

The plastic window is a special tool, that goes where the small timming window is.
