The gears on the left side of the shift quadrant are not engaging. I can move the shifter over to them but not in the slots. It's like something came out of socket inside. Is it something simple like a clip or spring....or could it be very bad? Any idea's would be appreciated. Jim

Jim-bo, I have trouble with the gears in the
left side in my 520 also. Mine, the lever goes into position but the tractor will not move. If
I shift back across and into reverse, then back to the (high) side everything seems to work OK. If you are restoring it you will want to go through the transmission, but if you're using it the reverse trick may buy you some time. ..... ..Dale

Jim, it sounds like it's still engaged in one of the gears & the shifter interlock won't let you complete the shift to the L/H side.
~We can make some guesses on what's hung up but even if the guess was correct you will still have to pull the trans top shifter cover to repair it.
~To repair your problem you will need to pull the trans top shifter cover & see what's not in position, at that time the problem will be evident & you can go from there. While in there reach down & see how loose the trans shafts are as you might have worn bearings that started the problem..
~If nothing found in the trans shift forks or shifter shafts & the bearings appear ok, just line all the shift shafts back up so they are in line & re-assemble it. Then don’t hurry the shift as that is what usually causes the problem you have.

Sorry,
I forgot to say that the right side gears will go in and out just fine. Does this mean that one of them is stuck in gear? I can use reverse though. I guess I will just have to go in and look. Since this tractor is an LP do you think that I will have to remove the LP tank to do this? Thanks for the comments Jim

Jim, it sounds like the problem might be in the under/over drive part of the trans or the interlock on the overdrive shift shaft/fork. You will need to pull the trans cover to tell for sure what the problem is.....
