Pulled oil pan off and found one of the bearings was spun. Some grooves on the crank. Does this call for a complete overhaul? Also, where should I buy rebuild kit? Only JD?

What type of bearing was spun - rod or main? Deeres will usually spin a rod bearing before a main, if oil starvation is the issue. Either way, the crank will likely need to be pulled for grinding or replacement. I recommend finding a good standard crank, as we have had issues with ground cranks cracking in the higher-horsepower tractors, although it may not be a problem in your 4020. If you do grind it, take it to a good machinist and make sure he properly reestablishes the journal fillet. If there is a sharp edge there, it can create a stress riser and lead to a broken crank. If you have the crank out, you may as well go all the way and rebuild the whole works - including a good head rebuild and complete check of the fuel system.

Yea, It was a rod bearing. Everything else looks good, but I'm hearing some good advice. I'll be doing a overhaul. Thanks for helping!

If I had to tear a 4020 down to the point of geting out the crank; which I have done, than I wouldn't put it back togeter without rebuilding it. In my oppinion it's just too much stinking work. I don't know much about the kits the other boys are talking about, I have just always went to Deere, but again if it were my tractor, I'd take and rebuild it if you have the means to pay for it. Later, Greg H.

Thanks Greg. I'm taking some good advice and I'm gonna do an overhaul. My 4020 is my bread and butter tractor. It's been very dependable and with me for a long time. Regards, Jeff

If the spun bearing is a main bearing, then you will have to have the block line bored to line up the bearing stands.this being the case you will have to tear the engine down, completely,so you might as well do a overhaul.I buy my kits from abilene machine.buy a Reliance kit, they are a little more expensive, but well worth it.If the spun bearing is a rod,you could just pull the crankand repair it,but you will have to take the rod out and have it sized. If the engine uses oil or is low on compression, rebuild it.
