I have a 39 B that was partially apart when I aquired the tractor and I was noticing in the parts manual that there are 3 different gasket thickness for the govenor and fan shaft gasket kit. What is the proper procedure to make sure that the amount of gaskets is used to get the backlash set on the gears on the fan shaft gear and on the 4 bolt cove on the opposite side of the mag?

Jim, first the governor must be removed from the tractor, then take a file or stone & remove any burrs on the back [heel] side of the gears. If the backs aren't flat & without burrs it will be impossible to line them up correctly. Then install the main governor shaft & L/H cover without any gaskets, tighten the bolts moderately tight then back them off 1 turn each. Then install the fan shaft with a thick & 2 thin gaskets & tighten the fan shaft bolts, then reach around the back side of the gears & use your finger to feel if the heels [back of the gear teeth] are lined up with each other, if not, vary the number of shims between the fan shaft & governor until they line up. You might have to back the L/H cover bolts out a little more [if you do, keep the turns even between all the bolts. Once the gear heels line up turn the 4 L/H cover bolts in [or out] EVENLY until you get about 1” backlash measured at the fan blade tip. Then use a feeler gage stack & measure the gap of the L/H cover to the governor case & add that much + .005” gasket thickness between the L/H cover & governor. Once the bolts are tight re-measure the backlash at the fan blade tip & add or subtract gasket thickness until the fan blade tip has about 1” of movement [on used gears, new gears can be set slightly tighter]….

Jim, when I did my 38 B, I had the governor and fanshaft set up level on a bench and used different gaskets on BOTH the fanshaft to governor AND the governor end bearing cap until the heels of the 2 bevel gears were were flush even together (neither sticking out past the other). That was my main concern to have them mesh evenly, and when I achieved that, the backlash allowed the fan to turn (sorry, I forget the exact total amount) slightly either direction before engaging. I know it turned like 1/8 turn before, but only something like an inch either way ??? after the new setting, and she whined a while but then settled in and got quiet after the gears seated in. The most important thing is the 2 bevel gears are a matched set, either both new (very expensive) or both from the same tractor (governor and fan shaft) if used.

Good luck n God Bless the USA
