Should I take off the magneto before welding on the tractor? I mean can welding hurt the mag(Wico X)? Thanks for any advice.

Johan, unless youre welding so close to it the heat or sparks might affect the cap, I dont think it needs to be removed due to any electrical problems it may cause. The Wico mag is just a permanent magnet rotor that rotates past a coil of wire and has points and condensor inside under the cap, so I dont forsee any problems when welding on the tractor. True, the welders current passes through the metal between where you attach the ground connector and the electrode, but I dont forsee any stray current hurtign the mag. To be safe, however, I would attach the ground electrode as near as possible to where youre welding so welding current is more confined.

Johan, you probably don't have to remove the mag to weld on the tractor. It depends on where you are grounding & where you are welding. You don't want to ground the welder to the mag or weld on or real close to the mag. About the only damage you could possibly do is effect the rotor magnetism if you pass current through the mag or place the mag in a welder induced magnet field. If you are welding with an AC polarity the chance of damage is pretty slim.....
