Okay guys, I know this isnt exactly a tractor question, more of a plumbing one, but I try n help when I can on this board and hope someone (any plumbers here??) can help me. Im making a splice in my campers gas line to a new water heater and think I have a leak which I obviously will not and can not tolerate for safetys sake so heres the question. The line is what I refer to as "soft roll copper tubing" that normally uses the flare nut fitings which I flare and never have any leaks in. I was needing to do a splice and didnt have a flare union on the farm but had some of those ferrule ring compression type fittings. The size I had fits perfect with the ferrule ring nice and smooth and tight and the nut behind it the right size just to fit on the line and turn. However, after both fitings and ferrules were installed and the nuts tight, I think I have a teeny tiny leak that wont stop regardles of more nut tightening. I believe however, any rough spot or imperfection in the tubes OD surface may be the cause of the leak. I may re do it with a new union and rings and sand and smooth the tube first. Anyway, Im also thinking, maybe the compression ferrule fittings are for the more rigid harder smoother looking copper tubing and NOT the soft roll copper stuff (which normally uses flare nuts), even though my sizes fit absolutely perfect.

CAN FERRULE RING COMPRESSION FITTINGS BE USED ON SOFT ROLL COPPER TUBING, OR SHOULD IT ONLY USE THE FLARE AND FLARE NUT FITTINGS ONLY

Thanks in advance Ol John T Nordhoff

DO NOT USE COMPRESSION FITTINGS ON LP LINES!!!!
It is not safe and should not be done. Only use flare fittings on soft copper when used on LP.

Thanks Clooney man and Bob, I cut the line, polished and smoothed it, and installed a new ferrule and snugged it down (didnt over tighten) and she sealed TIGHT no leaks. I may still replace it with a flare because that soft copper flare conforms so nicely to the beveled coupler and I think thats the safest way to go. (Ive never had one of those leak) I also figured if the line is any out of round, thats another potential cause of a non seal. On plastic water lines they use plastic (or neoprene whatever it is) ferrules so it makes sense as you say a softer ferrule is whats needed on soft roll copper tubing. It passed 30 mins of soapy water test with absolutely NO BUBBLES and even a flame over it never produced a burst or tiny flame, so its probably sealed until I wanna change it.

Take care John T

John, those compression unions aren't the best choice for volatile gas or liquids. That soft copper is softer than the brass Ferrule in the fitting & the soft line will ring pretty deep as the compression nuts are tightened, the tighter you try to tighten them the more they will deform the soft line & the more apt they are to leak. There are special ferrules made to use on soft copper, aluminum & plastic lines that spread the load out & don't just tighten on the ends like the compressible brass do.
~The company I work for won't let us use compression fittings on anything that can burn, explode or carries high pressure.
~You can try to get it to seal with some LP resistant sealer but you have to weigh you & your families safety against the connivance of those compression fittings. What would you recommend if someone asked you how to properly repair that LP line. I’ll bet it would be a flair fitting….

Hi John, I know (as I'm sure you do) that a ferrule type fitting is used on most automotive oil lines with a mechanical gauge so I don't see why they wouldn't work on LP. Liquid laundry detergent poured on your fittings will bubble if there is a leak and can help you pin-point potential troubles. Sorry I'm not more help. Bob
