I have a mid '60' JD 4020 (newly acquired) with a Transmission with which I am not familiar with, it is on the right side of the dash, aproximately 8 forward, and 4 reverse gears (all labels are gone). The problem is it seems to not want to go into gear as you move the shifter from reverse to forward. Is there a filter or a valve that may be causing this old tranny to not want to shift?

Thanks for all the info Guys. Can someone tell me what the 3 position lever is mounted under the seat almost against the floor, it is labeled 'LD', 'L I think', and another position that seems to not be labeled (lowest possition)?

Jim, in addition to what the other gentlemen said it is possible the tow selector is in the tow position (look to the left rear of the platform) and also the main disconnect clutch is disengaged. This lever is on the left side of the dash and should be in the forward position. There will be a knob at the lower left hand corner of the dash to pull if the disconnect lever is in the rearward position. Hope this helps. Mike

Jim, I have a 65 4020 powershift. The filters (there are two) are on the left side under the operator's platform. The covers are round, about 6" in diameter. These are not "screw on" filters, they are replaceable elements and both are the same. My powershift went out about a year ago. My son overhauled it for me. He found that the brakes had completely worn out and had disentegrated and the residue from the brakes had clogged up a screen in the bottom of the transmission and starved the pump. When my transmission failed, I had no forward or reverse gears. My 4020 had about 10,000 hours on it when the tranny went bad. Currently, when I shift from reverse to the forward side, if I don't make sure I push the shift lever completely to the right, I will not have any forward gears. (This is because the linkage needs a little adjustment.) If all four reverse gears work for you, it may be a matter of a little adjustment in the linkage to get the forward side to work.
This is just my experience and opinion. I am not a mechanic or a subject matter expert. Good luck.

The power shift tractors have two hydraulic filters on the clutch side of the transmission instead of one.

Sounds like you have a power shift 4020. It has been a while since I looked at one, but if I remember right there is a tranny filter on these. The problem is I don't remember where. I'll ask an old-timer today (Dad) if he remembers or has any idea. We have a 4020 LP with a Synchro Transmission, but I think it is filtered through the hydraulic system. I beleive your Power-Shift has a different setup. If I'm wrong I invite somebody more knowledgable out there to set me straight on this. (a little bit of knowledge administered incorrectly is a dangerous thing)
