I got back to my D project and have a couple questions.

Why does the outside clutch facing seem to break? I am two for two on broken outside clutch facings on D tractors.

I took the dust cover off that is located behind the belt pulley. The washers behind the 4 bolts look like they are made of soft metal. Are these a special JD washer?

cheg, I don't know why you outer clutch facing is breaking? If you tell how/where/when it's breaking maybe that will help pinpoint the cause.
~Those dust shield washers are indeed soft & they go on the lower bolts that are below oil level to prevent oil seeping. You can use thin brass or aluminum washers from your local auto parts or tractor supply store. Or just use thin steel washers with sealer on the bolt threads.
