Spun two rod bearings. one is .030 out and one is .010 out. Machinist says he can weld up crank and grind down but doesn't like doing this on diesel cranks. Should I buy a new or used one? After market or genuine JD? Also, who to buy from that can save me a couple $$$? Who's to say a remanufactured crank has not been welded up? Thanks to all who reply!!!

I can buy cranks all day long for $750 that have been checked and polished. On a non-turbo 404, as in a 4020, I wouldn't be one bit afraid of an aftermarket, as I have had several installed and they work fine. As far as a broken crank being a symptom, I am not sure what problem could break the crank?

I have heard of it working many times , but the two neighbors of mine that did it went bad , both were IH DT466 if that has anything to do with it or not . Maybe they had a bad job done both went to the same place . That's all I know about it .

Jeff , I wouldn't weld it , like I said before every crank I know of in a tractor that was welded eventually broke . As far as used or new I would check the aftermarket and oem . Reliance makes replacement parts for Deeres they are supposed to be as good as oem don't know how prices compare . The only place I know of that handles them is Worthington . Like you said about a rebuilt crank , has it been welded or what I don't know .

Often the spun bearings or broken crank occur again is they are just a symptom not the problem. The initial cause(s) were never found and repaired.
