The rockshaft housing on my old 1530 just broke in the back by the hydraulic fluid filler cap. It appears that the rockshaft in the fully raised position pushed the piston out far enough that the rockshaft actuating arm actually hit the back of the housing. After vibrating and pulling a disk for 10-15 hours it finally broke. Has this ever happened to anyone? How do I adjust the rockshaft piston for less travel? Since this part of the housing is not load bearing, can I weld the piece back on, grind the gasket surface smooth and be on my way? A new housing is $800 ....ouch. Anyone know of a decent JD junkyard in OH, IN, or KY? I am in Columbus, OH.

For the inside lift arm to contact the rockshaft housing is the way tractor is made. With the closed center hydaulics, when the inside arm contacts the housing and stops, the pressure builds to system pressure, and the pump goes out of stroke. There is no free play in the arms in full raised position, so there is no adjustment to limit lift.

What I have seen that breaks the housings, is having a mounted implement such as a scraper blade, or mounted plow in the raised position, and backing into a tree or something that jams the implement upward. Too much pressure might also cause a problem. Pressure should be 2250 PSI. If somebody has the pressure jacked up to 2500 or more, I would set it back. There should be plenty of the housings in salvage yards.

Thanks for the info. It seems odd that the housing itself is used to hold off that much force. Oh well, I guess Deere knows what is best. Usually I run with the 3pt lowered but I kept banging my legs on the arms while disking that I decided to lift the 3pt for the last few days of work. I don't know if the constant application of force worsened the effect or not. I contacted Anderson Tractor parts in Blufton, OH and we are working on identifying the correct casting.

Linn:

It's been 20 years since I bought parts from them, but Anderson's at Bluffton, Ohio was always pretty decent on later model stuff. It would be an easy drive up from Columbus...US 23 to Rt.30 West.

Sorry I don't have a their number handy, but the area code is 419.
