Just finished installing new wiring harness and new ammeter. Can't start yet, fuel tank not on, but checked with test light. Everything seems to work ok. Am wondering... Both posts on back of ammeter are hot, even with the ignition switch in the off position... Is this right?????

thanx much, in advance Jerry J. in Mi.

Hey Jerry, thats exactly right, an ammeter is "ideally" a short circuit, so whatever appears on one post, should appear the same on the other. It measures the current that flows through it. What I refer to as the ammeters "high" side has to get battery power somewhere, and its usually off the starter or sometimnes even direct to the non grounded battery terminal. The other side of the ammeter feeds all loads like lights and ignition and the BAT terminal on the Voltage Regulator (or on a 2 wire cut out relay) that way it monitors all current either out of (loads) or into (generators charging current) the battery.

Jerry, yes, that's correct. One post of the ammeter is hooked directly to the battery at the starter stud. The ammeter just basically passes current through it & measures what passes through it with a needle deflection so both posts are powered at all times. ~If that ammeter is installed correctly one post of the ammeter will be hooked to the starter stud & all other wires [loads] will be hooked to the other post. If it reads backwards when you get the tractor running just swap the wires from post to post on the ammeter....
