Honed cylinders on John Deere R. Put new rings and head redone. John Deere redid injecters. engine will only start when using start fluid, runs poorly, lots of smoke and diesel knock. Also presures up pony engine crank case. Any help with this matter would be appreciated

John,

I agree with Frank. It sounds to me like your injection pump timing is off. I also agree that the pressure build-up in the crackcase is more likely from the new rings and hone job on the cylinders. It will get better when the inj. timing is set and the tractor runs more. Good Luck!

Jim

Just had that same problem with my freshly overhauled 730D. An injector was loose. It diluted the fuel pretty quick and jammed the tip of the injector that I taken to a shop about six months earlier. Took them both to a different shop the second time and that guy fixed them right. It really runs and starts good now.

John:

I'm not an "R" man, but it sure sounds like the timing of the pumps is off. The excess blowby is probably the result of the fresh rings and will likely go away after you get that timing dead on.

I know pump timing can make a huge difference on 70/720/730 type diesels, and there is not much in the way of room for error. On fresh injectors/pumps/valves/rings, it should start real crisp.

I thank all you guys for the sound advice. I tried another set of injectors. I didnt count but im sure I retimed the injector punp 10 different ways and the tractor behaves exactly the smae way. Starts hard smokes so muck it burns your eyes. Should I go into the cam shaft timing or am I way out in lefty field? Im stuck!
