Can I replace the old original condensor that came on a splitdorf 246C or 246T magneto with a newer modern style capacitor? I have been told that I can use a .22 microfarad 600v cap but was not sure if this is the correct size. Does anyone know the specs on these old condensors or has anyone actually tried a replacement like this? I can buy the above capacitor for $3 and can easily adapt it to fit but I don't want to fry a set of points.
Thanks

-Jeff

Test specs. for 8429C condenser used in those mags was .09-.11 mfd as listed in Graham Lee tester book. A condenser for the IHC F4 & H4 mags is close enough at .13 mfd. Otherwise use the .22 mfd 600V capacitor. It is okay to go some higher on mfd capacity but just don't go lower than recommended. A 600V is recommended for magnetos. The lower 250V or 400V may work for while but wont hold up. I have the capacitors and so does Marks.

Jeff,
I agree you can unsolder the old can, pull the stuffings out, replace with a new hi-tech condenser of at least 400 working volts, and fasten the can back with epoxy/JB Weld... .

An old Edison Splitdorf catalog gives the following information: p/n 36164 (supersedes #8429c) is for a Splitdorf 246C and 246T, and the JD Electrical Systems manual has a value 0.090-0.15 (.015 sic) microfarads for that condenser.

I get my speciality condensers from Mark's Magneto 860-887-1094.

Jeff, yes as far as I know you can replace that cap. with a new style.. I show that E/S 246 capacitor as P/N 51441 [.132-.168 microfarad ]..

You might try Bill Lopoulos [978-649-7879] ..A while ago he was supposed to have some E/S parts maybe he can point you to the correct capacitor...
