Tetra-ethyl lead (TEPb)was first added to gasoline to increase the anti-knock (i.e. octane rating) properties of gas. I never heard Jack Sprat about valve lubrication until Congress started squeezing TEPb. My first new car was a '67 327 (10.5 Compression Ratio) i.e. designed for high test i.e. max amount of TEPb. It ran better when I sold (158,000 mi) it than it did when new. Why because it lived exclusively on Lead-Free most of its life. I paid more than a few tariffs to the Highway Patrol, but am glad they never saw me when I was late. If I felt compeled to use something I would use 2-cycle oil. I would not use lead or a substitute(*) if it were given to me. * One of the early proposed substitutes was a manganese compound which presents another problem.

Ernie,

If any tractor was made before unleaded gas was introduced, then it was orignally intended for leaded gas. If you needed to add a lead substitute, there is a product called "Lead It"--any auto parts store.

The real question is how much and how intense will you run her???...if you really plan on heating her up for extended periods with heavy loads, then would probably need to add the substitute. If not, then unleaded gas would be fine...some even recommend adding 2 cycle mixtures...both good for the gas treatment and valve/seats/etc...

good luck
