I just bought a 1020 John Deere that has brake problems. The right brake has to be pumped a couple of times before it will engage. When it engages, it works perfectly. The other brake works but engages near the bottom of the petal stroke. I noticed that there is a hydraulic cylinder block at the bottom of the brake petals. A friend told me that this problem is caused by the inside brake cylinders. I was hoping that rebuilding the external hydraulic petal cylinders would solve the problem without having to split the tractor. Any suggestions.

disconnect both brake lines at the brake valve and imediately cap the fittings of the valve (3/8 jic). now depress brake pedals one at a time. if there is some movement and then it stops, your valve is ok and the problem is with the piston seals at the final drives. if pedals go all the way down, check if the brake valve is filled with oil (remove right foot rest and the plug from top of the valve). if it is filled, then the problem is with the valve. if it's empty, fill it through the opening with jd transmission/hydraulic oil, bleed the valve (remove cap from outlet fitting, depress pedal all the way and plug opening with finger when returning pedal back up. do it a few times untill air free oil comes out of the fitting. keep valve filled all the time) cap the fittings an try again. if now pedals stay high when depressed, there may be a problem with the filling of the valve. reconnect lines, bleed brakes while keeping the valve full and check them.

Pull the transmission oil filter and look for brake or clutch pack friction material along with metal filings. If ordinary 140 weight gear oil has been dumped into the transmission instead of Hy-Guard there could be problem$.
