I have an early 70's model 1530 that looses the power steering after about 4-6 hours of run time,I was told the hydraulic pump was the probable culprit and replaced it, but it hasn't solved the problem, what should i try next?

Bill: We have a 830 and 2030, I agree with the other comments but would also check and replace the filter (under the transmission).

I've got a '66 1020, which should be fairly similar to your 1530. Here's my experience -
I'm guessing you replaced the front pump. There's also a pump in the rear that feeds the front pump. There's a screen right in front of the inlet to the rear pump that collects all big the junk in the system, the filter collect the small junk. It should be on the bottom right side, just to the rear of the filter. It's a long tubular piece that looks like heavy duty window screen. My first inclination would be to fish it out and clean it.

Second idea is that my 1020 had that kind of a problem some years ago when I tried to mix good hydraulic fluid with cheap fluid. I'd guess just pure cheap fluid would produce the same result. The stuff foams in either case, those air bubbles don't compress like fluid so you have weak hydraulics. I upped for the 10 gallons of pricey JD fluid a couple of times, then found some Pennzoil fluid that works fine. The store brand fluid caused nothing but problems.

Third idea is that there is a de-stroke adjustment on the front pump. It's a screw surrounded by a positioning nut. I'd think your new pump had that adjusted, but you might loosen it and give it one turn clockwise to see if that makes a difference.
