I just bought an 1958 820 that I was told had working Hydraulics. They do "work" but they can hardly lift anything. I just hooked it up to a 15 foot disk. Once I drop the disk I can't lift it again. The oil was low by a quart. I filled it and ran engine at full speed and still can not lift it. I can see the oil in the Power Trol needs to be changed because of it's milky color. Will changing the oil make that much difference or do I need major work on the Power Trol? Are they expensive to fix?

John, I'm no mechanic but I can offer you this. In the early 1970's I bought a new very heavy offset 12 ft disk and put a 3-1/2" cylinder on it. My 820 would not lift it, so I changed to a 4" cylinder and it lifted it fine. Consider how heavy your disk is and what size cylinder you are using. If you think you have adequate cylinder size for the weight of the disk, then you probably have other problems. If you change oil, be sure to change the filter also. This could also be your problem. In the many years I used my 820 for farming, I never had any trouble with the hydraulic system. Good luck.

There ought to be, but there isn't. Maybe he's mistaken.

An industrial 840 has an oil filter and auxiliary reservoir. The ag tractors just let crud settle to the bottom and hoped someone kept the hose tips clean. Put the test hose/gauge/valve on it and see if she makes 1050psi.
