Was looking at tractors and saw a nice little JD with a loader. Dealer said it was foreign made. Name sounded Korean or Chinese. Was he kidding?
Of course he wanted to sell New New Hollands not used JD's. Don't know how old it was. Thought maybe some JD fans could shed light on it.
Thanks,
Jerry

The small compact tractors that Deere markets are Yanmars, built to Deere´s specs. Very durable little tractors if used for what they were designed for. All the major manufactures market Japanese built tractors in their compact lines.

For better or worse, I guess depending on one's point of view, the days of buying totally American made products are over. All the major manufacturing companies, including Deere, have plants all over the world. They have to do this to survive the competition. They also contract with foreign manufacturers to build everything from parts to entire assemblies that may be shipped to the US for the addition of sheet metal and company decals or whatever. That enables the manufacturers to say they are "made in the USA.

Mike is incorrect. The 5000 series tractors with parts from various places in the world were designed in Waterloo, Iowa at the John Deere Product Engineering Center, and are assembled in Augusta, Georgia.

The sub-comapact, 4000 series tractors are also assembled in the US, I believe in the South East US also. Again from parts from around the world. The tractor was also designed in the US.

The smaller Deere tractors do use some Yanmar parts, of which many are assembled in the US.

But to say that they are Yanmar tractors is incorrect.

Deere did buy some Yanmar tractors many years ago, but no longer.

Yanmar STILL builds the 790 and 990 for Deere.

Additionally, I might add that most 4000's are made in Augusta too, but those whose model numbers start with 41 are from Yanmar's subsidary company, Kanzaki, in Japan. Then there's a new smaller model, the 2200 or sometning like that, that is from Kanzaki too. Some India made 5000's are also now in the US market place. Don't be afraid of the Japanese made tractors or components, they are probably the best in the world.

New Holland's compact tractors are now assembled at Dublin, GA. with many Japanese components.
