Bought a 40S and the hydraulics will not lift the 3 pt at all. Is there a way to test the pump to see if it is putting out any pressure, or should I tear into the hydro parts under the seat???

Jim, that is a fairly complicated system to work on & check out. Seeing as it is an "S" it probably has the single Touch-o-matic on it & that is a lot easier than the dual set-up.
~There is a test plug on top of the T-O-M rear hydraulic unit but you must install a pipe plug down inside the port to test the pressure. ~My first suggestion would be to pull the pump inlet line either at the pump or at a high spot in the line & use an oil can & prime the system [a common problem if the tractor has not been operated in a long time].
~If the priming doesn't help you really need a hydraulic manual on that T-O-M system to avoid adding a lot of extra work or mis-adjusting something that you don't have to & causing yourself a lot of extra work.
~Try the priming first & if that doesn’t get it to work post back & either myself or Wayne will talk you through a pressure test & basic trouble shooting of that T-O-M system.
~If by chance it has a Dual T-O-M system let us know that…

Jim, as Clooney said, if you don't have a manual, you will have to be careful with that unit. I don't know how familar you are with this system, but here are some basics:
1- Make sure the system is full of oil. It must run out with the petcock open, the one on the right rear of the rockshaft housing.
2- Deere reccomends non-det. 10w motor oil. 20w or even 30w will work, just may cause more viberation in the lines.
3- To test the pump, if you don't have access to a high pressure gage (over 1000 lbs.) You can loosen the smaller line at the lift housing, then spin the engine over, it should squirt a good stream of oil. If not, something is wrong with the pump or lines or fittings. This is a messy way to test, but at least it will tell you if the pump is working.
4- If all the above is ok, you may have to go into the lift unit. Get a manual for this. The service manual is SM2013 the parts manual is PC862 Both these manuals are invaluable if you plan on keeping or working on the tractor.
5- If you do have to go into the unit, the piston rings and other seals and o-rings are pretty easy to replace. Just don't mess with the relief valve, unless you are expierenced with this system.
6- Post back on your findings, we can work you through a re-build, if it is necessary.
