I just bought a 1010 JD that has been setting for a few years in a barn. The motor sounds and runs great with plenty of power. The only problem is when you first start it up it smokes and smells like gas when you first start it. It doesn't smoke at all when you are running it? Someone told me it is probably the valve seats?? Or would this be a Carb. problem. The tractor idels and revs up fine. If it is the valve seats how much trouble are they to change??
Thank for the help.

I have a similar question about a 1010 I would like to tag onto yours if I may. Mine blows a lot of smoke out the vent pipe, particularly in a hard pull. Anyone want to suggest to me if I am faced with the same problem Jake has or something different?

What you have is blow-by. This is compression that is by-passing the rings and venting out of the breather tube. The fix for this is new piston rings,or pistons, rings, liners, depending on how much wear you have in the cylinders.

I was afraid that would be the answer but was hoping otherwise. Thanks for the diagnosis.

Jake, I am not that familar with the 1010 but usually any engine that smokes after first starting up is bad valve seals or valve guides or both, Not SEATS. If the valve seats were burned, it would miss. As I said, I am not familar with that particular engine, but sometimes the valve seals can be changed by just removing the valve cover and using compressed air in the spark plug holes to keep the valve from dropping while changing the seals. If this is not possible, you will have to pull the head off. You also will have to pull it, if the guides are bad.
