The motor housing/frame is bolted to the plastic tank; so it's not grounded to any metal frame. The motor is grounded to the tractor frame using the red wire from the motor.

If I connect the black wire from the left battery negative post to the switch and then to the black motor wire; and then connect the red wire from the motor to the postive battery post on the left battery, the motor should turn the correct direction?

So just switching the the two wires between the left and right pos/neg battery posts after baling half the field should about balance the load and prevent the uneven charging/discharging while baling hay.

Depending on the pump type it may not matter which direction it turns. My Shurflo pump is a diaphram pump and so the diaphrams always pump no matter which direction the pump turns. On a gear pump it would matter very much which direction the moter turns.

But I would switch to the other battery more often than 1/2 a feild of hay. Every 10 minutes seems better to me.

Back when I went to John Deere training school on the Delco Remy 24/split 12-12 system, we were advised to install a matching resistor in situations like yours. If your electric motor draws 5 amps (60 watts) when in use you could wire a resistor to draw matching current off the opposite battery when in use.
