I have a 1944 A. It has a single hydralic outlet and I am unsure whick oil to put back in it when I do an oil change. Does the rearend and hydralic system use the same oil? I think the engine oil should be 30 weight but I am unsure about what to put in the rear. I appreicate any and all help.

Jeff

Jeff:

You can order manuals direct from Deere publishing, you can call 800-522-7448. Have a credit card handy.

Operators manual says for the transmission to use a straight 90W under 32 degrees and a straight 140W over 32 degrees. I've found the seals can start to leak and drip when I put 80-90 in mine. Did not want to split the tractor to replace the gasket so put in the 140 weight and never had a problem since. Your John Deere dealer has reprints of the original manual and they are kind of invaluable.

I use 30w oil in the engine, 80w-90w gear lube in the transmission/rearend, and straigth non-detergent 30w in the hydraulics/power-trol. This is what the operators manual says to use. Any other questions on this, just email me, I'll be glad to help.

THANKS for your help.
I am new to this old tractor stuff so please bear with me. I know where to add both the enginge oil and pow-trol but where do you add the rearend oil?

The rear end and transmission gear lube goes into a large hole that is just behind the rear axle on the right side. It has a 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch plug with a square head on it. This is the fill for both the differential and transmission. They have seperate drain plugs underneath. Hope this helps.
