I have a 1010 that smokes when you first start it up? and I also noticed that the vent tube that comes from the valve cover has a little smoke coming out of it also. Would this be the valve seals need replacing? Has anyone ever changed any out and how much trouble is it?
Thanks

Sounds the same as my 1010. However, the smoke I get on startup is pretty definitely from the fact that I nearly always have to give it a little choke to get it to start. Just went through the carb so that may improve now. But instead of getting a little smoke from the vent pipe as you describe, I get a lot during a hard pull. Last time I checked the compression it was even across all cylinders, although I don't know what the correct compression is supposed to be for that engine. I just drive it hard anyway and check the oil often. I can put a LOT of oil through it for the price of an overhaul, particularly since it is more of a hobby tractor that doesn't get regular or heavy use.

Josh, smoking when first starting up, usually means bad valve seals or guides or both. Smoke from the valve cover means blow by, due to worn piston rings or cylinder wear or both. I have never built a 1010 engine, but have heard they are expensive to rebuild due to the fact the engine has some sort of sleeve assembly that has to be bought as a unit.
