Hello,

I am 13 years old and am going into the eighth grade. Every year, we are required to do a project that requires intensive research and takes most of the year. It is presented to judges in the spring and if I do well, I could go to state and national competitions.

My topic will be somewhere along the lines of the transition from the two-cylinder era to the New Generation of Power. I need any help you can give. If you or anyone you know worked for Deere at the time, you/they will be of help. Or, if you recommend reading or overlooking any books on the topic, that will be taken seriously. (Don’t tell me to forget about it unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE it is no good and the facts are incorrect, please.)

In short, any bit of information about this process is helpful, knowing that I need anywhere from fifteen to twenty-five sources of information.

Thank you in advance,

Daniel Meyer
Carthage, MO

Daniel; I checked my copy of Designing the New Generatoin JD Tractors today & there is quite a bit of info on the change to the new generation tractors. I would also recomend "John Deere Tractors and Equiptment" Volumes #1&2 by Don Macmillian-also available from ASAE. Be sure to post back when your project is finished-good luck!!!!! ! CMB

Dan

This may sound germain but you didn't mention getting on the puter at your local library. Most of them are hooked into a network and they can get the books in when available and will call you when the book you requested comes in.

I don't know the name of the book, but my local dealer mentioned one he has that talks about the introduction of the 1010 and 2010 and how they nearly bankrupted the company. That certainly sounds like a transition issue to me, so you might check with your local dealer and see what he has on the topic.

While it's true that Deere spent a lot of money correcting 1010/2010 problems, this old tale about these tractors "nearly bankrupting" Deere is pure BS. Show me the proof!! Name the book, I'd love to have a copy!!

"Designing the New Generation John Deere Tractors" by Merle Miller has a wealth of info on the 3010 & 4010. Merle was on the design team for these tractors and I feel this book is a must for any JD fan. Merle is now retired & I was able to meet & talk with him several yrs ago,-A very knowledgable & nice individual. This book is available from American Society of Agricultural Engineers 2950 Niles Rd St Joseph Mi. I'm sure others will have more suggestions for you. Good luck with your project.

Thanks, guys, and Loren: I will check into it. I have heard of "Designing the New Generation John Deere Tractors" and am trying to get it off of Amazon.com. There is a used one pretty cheap right now. Thanks again, and when I am done (next spring or even summer) I will tell you how it went.

Daniel
