1010 Electronic Ignition Problem

I'm converting my 1010 over to electronic ignition. I've installed a new high energy coil and ignitor, but the tractor won't start. I pulled one of the wires and installed an old sparkplug, and there is spark, although not a real strong spark. The "business" part of the ignitor sits at 2:00 o'clock position in the distributor, while the old points set in the 10:00. Can that be my problem? Anything else you guys can think of? The ignitor/coil is a pertronix.

It dosen't make any difference where the pick up is located in the distributer, although you may have to turn the distributer slightly to get the exact timing. The units I have seen you have to switch to negative ground, the negative terminal of the coil goes to the distributer. The hot wire of the pick up has to be hooked to the switch side of the resistor. There were some changes in the wireing over the years. If yours has a pink wire, it is a resistor wire. Some had a ceramic resistor. You don't need both the pink wire, and the ceramic resistor.

There are 2 wires coming off the ignitor. The black one I wired to the negative side of the coil. The red wire from the ignitor was wired to the positive side of the coil, along with the wire which goes to the starter switch. It looks like the tractor may of had a ballast resistor at one time as the wire between the starter switch and coil was spliced. However, I bought a 3.0 ohm 40,000 volt coil that doesn't require the resistor. This was confirmed in the instructions I got from Pertronix with the ignitor. Does the setup I desribed makes sense? There were several options in the instructions, the described one is the one I followed. The tractor is negative ground with the ground lead attached to the intake manifold. I appreciate your help.

If you are sure there is no resistor, or resistor wire in the system, you have it wired right. If there is a pink wire from the switch to the coil, check to be sure it does not have resistance. The red wire from the ignitor needs the full twelve volts. Try a jumper wire from the battery to the switch side of the coil, with the red ignitor wire attached also. If this makes any difference, there is resistance somewhere in the switch circuit.

I jumpered it from the positive side of the battery to the positive side of the coil and it did not make any differece when I tried to start it.

Did you get the proper kit for a positive ground?

The tractor is wired for negative ground, with the negative lead of the battery grounded to the intake manifold. It was that way when I bought the tractor 5 years ago. Not sure if it was changed over or came that way new. I bought pertronix ignitor 1544 for a negative ground tractor.
