Finally got the filter head etc. out. It is broken where the filter stud screws into the cover. A chunk about the size of half dollar is still attached to the stud. Also broken is the by pass valve. The cover is available from the local JD dealer for about $80. He said the by pass valve is no longer available from JD.

Getting the head and cover out was a real bear. If it wasn't so darn hard to work on I would braze the break but only want to do this once so will buy the new cover. As for the by pass valve I'm in the dark. Would appreciate any suggestion or idea from any one.

Mr Clooney-this is the same problem that you advised me on a week or two ago.

Thanks and God Bless JM

JM, on that filter cover, they are usually either good or bad & not much in between. That is an ideal part to obtain from a tractor scrap yard. Same with the by-pass valve. You can try a few local tractor parts places & if that doesn't pan out try some of the bigger yards listed in Green Magazine....

Joe, If I can figure out what bypass valve you need... I might have a NOS one here. The problem will be finding it. Meanwhile I'll look in my parts book and see if I can figure out what you need.
what serial number/year tractor are you working on?

I had exact problem,, I bronzed mine, the bypass valve was broke too, I took a 5/16th bolt bout 3/4 inch long put a washer and nut on it, stuck it in the hole with the spring on top of the head of bolt down to the washer, and whoopee it worked,,,so far anyway,,Id say if you can find a used one it would be best,,my cheap 2 cents worth,,,,Bill

guess that large nut makes folks think they need a 3/4 inch drive....that cup only requries to be snugged up to hold the 16 lbs pressure...I've seen the same problem...but wouldn't it be better to go to a salvage yard for parts...those items should be readily available...
