Thanks for all the great responses on the Model H. I have come to the conclusion that the mag is at fault, will not jump that 3/16" open air spark gap. My local JD partsman tells me he has seen a few H's with the FMJ on it.
Condenser checks out at .2 MFD with no leakage, points look good, not burnt and gapped @ 15 thou, cap and wires are fine, wires are the solid core type, plug is AC C86, impulse spring is good, bushings on the shaft are worn a bit, are my magnets requiring a repolarization to make them stronger? Coil is 1.4 ohms on the primary, 5.3 kohms on the secondary.
Is this thing worth rebuilding or should I be looking for a replacement? Are parts available?
What would this cost me in U.S.$?
Thanks to all.
Herman

Herman, that Fairbanks mag might be an export thing. ~It's been quite a while since I have worked on one of those Fairbanks FMJ mags. ~If you have a weak spark it might be a good idea to have the magnetic rotor re-magnetized [pay attention to the gear timing inside or you will never get a good spark].
~If the rotor re-magnetizing doesn't get you a good spark & the gears are in time, you might look for rust on the coil, magnetic rotor, & wire connections.
~I don't have any FMJ specs handy but what you measured seems to be in line with a working mag.
~If I get a chance I will measure one [I think I have one in a box it the barn somewhere] & see how your specs compare. ~You might try calling Bill Lopoulos [978-649-7879] or E-Mail him at blopoulos@aol.com ~Bill still has parts for those FMJ mags & can probably tell you if your numbers are in the ball park for that FMJ mag.
~I’m not sure what the mag availability situation is where you are at but before you put a lot of money into that FMJ mag you might want to look at a Wico C [the majority of Deere H’s came with that], or the Wico X [XH], the X is a little later style mag with a proven performance history…
~Duane Larson seems to be a wealth of knowledge on what came on what tractor & maybe can shed some light on the use of a Fairbanks FMJ mag on the Deere H…

Herman,
Your FMJ was an aftermarket magneto made by FM for the 2-cyl JD. It is likely an FMJ2B6. There are no gears in the magneto, just a big rotor disk which has a piece of metal embedded in it, and as it passes by the brushes in the cap it picks up the spark for the proper outlet at the cap. Your component parameters sound fine, as far as they go. The magnet is Alnico, and rarely needs recharging (in my experience). The more likely problem is breakdown in the coil. Is it black in color, or the more modern orange one? If it is black, it likely is suffering from leakage due to poor insulation, with a resulting weak spark output. I look at them on a scope to determine the output, and it is not uncommon to have an age-related problem with the old coils.

You might also take an eraser (back end of a "lead" pencil) and clean the rotor disk, and check that all three brushes in the cap are in place and in good condition. Also make sure that the screws holding the coil in place are tight and making good contact with the coil pole piece.

In my opinion, FM finally got it right when they brought out the FMJ mag, but by then had lost the JD contract. The FMJ is often hotter than either a Wico C or XH, but was never offered as original equipment on a JD. I am currently running one on my GPWT.

Post back with the color of the coil, and condition of the rotor and brushes.

Hello again to the magneto experts out there. My coil is black and the rotor had a small indent where the brush made contact, but last year, I machined that down to make the entire surface true again. Where would I purchase one of these orange coils and how $$$$$.
Thanks
Herman
