My 51 "B" was running fine, then while waiting in line to start the 4th of July parade it just bogged down and quit. Got it restarted and it idled for about 10 min. then bogged down and stopped again. Finally worn down the battery and had to jump it off, but every time it started it would run and then bogg down and stop. Any thoughts, carborator, dirty fuel????

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the feed back.

It did blow black smoke prior to quitting each time. However, if I throttled it back it would continue to run for a brief moment and then when I throttled it back up it quit.

It was quit hot and humid and the vapor lock sounds suspect.

Also, it had not been ran for about 9 months prior to me bring in down. Dad put 3-5 gal of gas in it and I put another 3 in it prior to the parade. Could some trash or water be in the tank and gotten into the carb??

I'll check on the suggestions and post any results.

Thanks again.

Jerome

Jerome,
In addition to the previous comments, it is possible your coil is failing as it heats up. This would be true for either a distributor or magneto coil. As it cools down it will function again for a short period. If the previous suggestions don't solve the problem, check the resistance of the coil secondary to ground - it should be 5000-10000 ohms.

My 46 D is doing the same thing. I did a fuel flow test months back and found a bent line. I was convinced that was it and did not work on it again untill this weekend. The D started ran for 45 seconds fine then died. With another quick restart it acted like the timing was off. I reckecked it. Came back an hour later. It started fine ran for 45 seconds then died. I think I have magneto problems like Duane is talking about. If I remember correctly it is a fairbanks moorse model J. I thought they were supposed to have Wicos. Any thoughts?

Hi John,
Indeed, if you have a Fairbanks Morse magneto on your D it is a replacement, not original equipment. It will be a FMJ2B6 most likely - a good mag, usually hotter than the Wico. However, your '46D came originally with an Edison Splitdorf CD spec 0010, so when it failed someone replaced it with the FM. Check the resistance of the coil between the HV take-off and ground, should be 8000-12000 ohms. If it is open, contact me off-line at jdlarson@comcast.net and I can fix you up with a new coil (after I get back from EXPO-XIII).

Jerome, if it was real hot & humid during the parade maybe you just vapor locked... If it doesn't act up again [after it cools] suspect it was vapor lock... If vapor lock is suspected make sure the fuel line isn't running too close to the exhaust manifold. Or if you have added an in line fuel filter make sure it isn't too close to manifold heat.
~If your problem is persistent [even when cold] then do a fuel flow test...To do that,, just open the carb drain on the bottom of the carb & & see if you get a pencil sized stream of fuel for AT LEAST 30 SECONDS,,if you don't then suspect a plugged fuel strainer, or plugged inlet strainer in the carb, or a blockage in the fuel tank at the tank fitting area.
~If it passes the fuel flow test you could have an ignition coil overheating [if your B was converted to 12 volts & the original 6 volt coil is being used without a ballast resistor]... If it's been converted to 12 volts post back for coil trouble shooting details.
~If you were getting black smoke from the muffler when it quit, MAKE SURE the choke plate in the carb is opening ALL THE WAY. Just because the external lever & rod is in the open position doesn't mean the choke plate inside the carb is all the way open.. [it might be a good idea to pull the air intake & take a look]...
