Today I saw a good looking 430 on a trailor beside the highway in front of this nice house with a for sale sign on it. The seller said he was selling it for his son's friend and didn't have any first hand knowledge of the tractor's condition but said the owner said he was mowing when something let go in the engine. He immediately killed it. He said it would still crank and run but made noise. He thinks the crank might have broken, however he doesn't know anything about mechanics. The tractor was fresh out of the field and the only wear that I could see was heavy wear on the overrun adapter mounted on the pto shaft. I bought it and brought it home but didn't try to crank it.
Anybody want to guess what I am probably looking at?

I am not sure about a 430 but I had a 8N ford that the oil pickup tube came off the pump one time. It made one heck of a knocking noise. I thought I blew up the engine. Put a new tube on it and it is still running great. I got lucky.

John

I would bet a pay check that the guy knew a whole lot more than he was saying. I hope you got a heck of a deal if he would not crank it.

I will take a real wild guess and say that the cluster gear exploded in the tranny. Look on the forward right lower portion of the tranny where the bulge is and see if there is oil starting to seep out from the cracked case. I hope i am wrong.

Good Luck

John, your noise & problem could be almost anything [you will have to either run it or disassemble it to tell].
~The usual thing to break on a 430 while brush-hogging are the gears in the transmission[depends on the PTO type]..... .....

Anything from bearings, pistons, cam, valves, governer etc. clutch etc. Doubt if it is the crank if it still runs.
