Besides a failed battery. Too high system voltage 13.8V 70F+, 14.2v at 32F and lower and 14.5v below 0F. Over voltage results in high currents, gassing, over heating. Over filling, vibration and high ambiant temps will make a battery slobber too. Running a lead acid battery over 80F shortens it's life.

If I understand Jerry correctly, he does not have his charging system hooked up.

I have never seen a battery do this unless it is over charging. If this is the case and you do have the charging system hooked up---(this perhaps does not pertain to this situation) The very first thing you should do is tap on the voltage regulator, usually a fairly sharp blow. The contactors are welding themselves together is the simplest way of explaining it. Good luck Dave NE Iowa

Sorry but did you have a draw from the starter? Does it spark when hooking battery post up? (BE CAREFULL AS YOU MAY HAVE TO HAVE SOME ONE READ THESE POSTS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IF THE BATTERY EXPLODES) A draw or short could maybe make it boil. I will keep thinking on this one and post back if I get any other ideas. Try unhooking the battery post and see if it still boils. Dave NE Iowa

A frequent cause of boiling is overcharging. With the tractor running, place a voltmeter across the battery terminals. If the voltage is 15 or higher, it is overcharging. Another cause is a loose internal cell connector- the 12 volt battery has 6 internal cells. That condition usually results in one or 2 cells using lots of water while the others do not. Battery replacement is the cure for loose internal connectors.

Just a note on batteries----A friend of mine used to work at a battery manufacturing Co. His job was to take batteries returned to the factory (defective ones) and repair them. The way they fixed most of them was to drop them hard on the work bench. If I have my story straight a small chunck of lead would be laying across the plates. Thus -- smacking the battery down hard would jar it loose, then settle to the bottom. While on this subject my second cousin who worked in the same factory decided what brand of batteries they were making for the day by the stencils he took to the assembly line with the fork lift. Since you do not have any charge going to your battery and it is still boiling over-I would almost guarantee your battery has served most of its useful life. It may work for you however for quite some time-the biggest problem is the mess and the chance that you may ruin your battery box. Jack
