I have been looking at a 37 A that is for sale and found it to have oil floating on the surface of the coolant when I inspected the radiator. Is this an indication of a cracked block or could it be a leaking head gasket. It looks as though the head gasket is leaking. I can see what looks like oil where the head meets the block. The tractor does run hlf ways decent, but I think the carb needs cleaned. The owner said the guy he bought it from some years ago said the engine was rebuilt. Any inf o is appreciated. Thanks Much,
John

John,
Since you see oil around the gasket area, that is probably your problem. But it also could be a cracked block or cracked head. It is more common to see water in the oil than oil in the water since the radiator is higher than the engine. I would also look carefully for that. Before you start taking anything apart, I would drain the oil, leave the coolant in and remove the engine and valve covers. Wait a week or so and see if you can see the leak. You may have to look closely, I had a crack in my B block that allowed coolant to leak into a pushrod hole and was really hard to find. Be real careful when you take the head off, because a drop or two of antifreeze can give you a good indication of where the leak is. Also when you have the head off check the manifold gasket surface. It is a weak point on old Deere's. I usually have the head and manifold surfaced whenever I take one apart unless I'm really sure it is good. Doesn't cost much with the new surfacers at a good machine shop. Good luck,
Paul

There is water in the oil also. I thought that could be from condensation though. The tractor has been settting for a numbeer of years without running.

John,
Does the tractor have anti freeze in it or water? Does any other part of it show evidence of having water freeze in it(like welded cracks in the head or water pipes)? If not, it's probably a bad head gasket but still could be a cracked head or block. If it's not too bad maybe some stop leak will hold for a while, but my experience is eventually you'll end up taking it apart and fixing whatever is wrong. Of course, I base this on my "using" tractors which don't see a lot of hours but do get used under load. Maybe it would be different if you just paraded it a few hours a year. Still not an insurmountable problem if the rest of the tractor is good and the price is right.

Paul, The tractor had antifreeze in it, but wasn't completely full. We drained the radiator and filled her up with just water for now. I don't think there are any welds on the block, but will insect it again. The guy who has the tractor is asking $2700 for it. Factory round spokes on front and skeletons on rear. Sheetmetal is above average. No oil leaks to speak of. Paint is good. I usually drive my tractors at least a few hours a week. He told me if I didn't want it after I took it home just bring her back and he would give me my money back. He is a neighbor of mine.
Thanks, John
