Yayyyyy yyyyy yyyy the dreaded job I worried and fretted over is done, was easy, and finished before 10 o clock this morning. It was my post below about two 3/4 bolts broke off up in my 620 Tricycle steering pedestal mount. I knew heat to melt/slobber them out wasnt a good idea as confirmed by Ben and all you good ol boys on here, but I just had to ask anyway and seek moral support. I really didnt want to have to drill them out in that hard overhead positiion grrrrr rrr that would have been time and energy consuming requiring sweat and strain and maybe even a few adult beverages. Anyway, the peen punch and turn trick wouldnt phase them, so on the one broke off flush I welded a big washer right over and to the broken off bolt and then welded a big nut to it and placed a 6 point socket and a breaker bar on the nut and started hittign the wrench end with a hammer to shock it and YAYYYYY YY she started to turn out. At my age when thigns I fear go that well, its almost a big a thrill as something else used to be some years ago lol. The other had a stub sticking out so I was able to just weld a nut to it and it also came out. I cleaned out the holes and then ran a tap through them all a few times and now they are clean and threaded smooth. I have all new bolts and lock washers ready to reinstall when my son can help me roll/guide the pedestal back up into position.

Thanks to all for the help, advice and moral support. What a great bunch on here. God Bless Yall

Hey John,
You just proved what I've said for years. The stuff you worry and stew about is very seldom a problem. The jobs you think will be easy are the ones that bite you in the behind. Glad you got it fixed. Paul

John T:

Glad to hear you had success ! If you have any short pieces of threaded rod of that size around, using two of them as guide pilots really makes getting it lined much easier. And make sure you have bolts that are threaded long enough down the shank. I had to fix one once where they had "bottomed" the bolts because they ran out of thread. They pedestal was just loose by say .030" or so, and it broke off just as they were shifting into road gear with a 120 bale load of red clover. It was in front of my house, so I got elected to fix it. It was a 630.

Those were a pistol !
