I have a friend that just acquired a JD 420 tractor, Can anyone tell me what kind of oil goes in the hydraulic system on that tractor? Thanks for any replies!

I have tried 30wND, 10WND, and just regular old john deere spec hyd oil and found 30w made my mt lines on the dual t-o-m rattle and humm until it warmed up and that was about 5min in south louisiana heat, the hyd oil had a tendency to clean out the system on my m and took 4 changes to get rid of 50 years of crap it loosened up, I replaced both with 10WND and found it ran smoothly and lifted like a gem. (10w was cheap by the 5gal bucket compared to the Hyd oil) Just my 1&1/2 cents.

I believe the book calls for 30 wt non detergent. In my 430 I use hydraulic oil with the same specs asused in the later tractors.

Jim, the original manual from Deere calls for 10w non-detergent motor oil. 30w ND is ok for warm weather, but in cold weather can cause more line viberation. I would say if 10w motor oil was ok when they were new, why change?

I was able to find it at Tractor Supply as my Wal Mart and auto parts stores did not have it.

Richard, some Wal-Mart stores have it. My local small town parts store keeps it. They have a lot of loggers that have older hyd. equipment that uses it. If nothing else, get your local parts store to order you some. It is just the cheap stuff and a case won't cost much.
