If the tractor is a diesel, check to see if it still has 24 volt electrical system. If you are not found of messing with electrical problems all the time, then look for something else (or assume a cost of about 400USD to convert...that is what I did and all my problems...just disappeared). Secondly (again if diesel), have the tractor run for a while and check for drips of black gunk off the exhaust manifold. If you see some, likely to be a sign that injector work needs to be done. If it is the bosch style (I think that right), can probably get them rebuilt for around 120USD. As to powershift in particular, if you are real paranoid about spending big bucks fixing a transmission some day, either walk away or have a technican that knows what to test for check the transmission (with use of a oil pressure gauge one can check for pressure leaks for all the different gears...leaks indicate need for a possible rebuild ...which I've see quotes as high as 6000USD for parts...no labor included). Also note that the PTO is part of the transmission clutch pack (if I've interpretted the service manual correctly). It is also hydraulically operated...again a technican with a oil pressure gauge can check the operation of the PTO. If I had it to do over again, it would be a tough decision whether I would have still bought my 4020D powershift or not. I am using it now, but I suspect low pressure in some of the gears and suspect the PTO might be slipping. If I do most of the work myself (which most advise not to), I looking at buying the tractor all over again....be a lot more if I have JD do it. After thinking about it as I type, I think I still would have bought it...it still a good tractor and is working yet. Don't mean to scare you away, just trying to give you some options to think about...course you could always do what my dad did....that is only buy from a dealer (with assumption that the dealer will stand behind their stuff).
